BTV FAQ's Page

This is a collection frequently asked questions that might help in your navigation or search for information on this site. Please look over all our FAQ's listed below, as they might answer any questions you may already have.

Some televisions or VCRs have switches or settings which put the device into cable ready mode. Check for these before submitting a service request through your Resident Assistant or Fix My Home Please.

If you’re on our site, you’re more than half way there already! Go to the main Boiler Television website and look for the links on the left. Click on Page Requests and follow the instructions. You may even upload graphic files if you prefer. Ads may run 1-3 days. If you need more time, you need to make more than one submission and CHANGE THE TEXT of the ad. This keeps things fresh and helps your ad get noticed.

Unfortunately no. Our system is a single-tier system where everyone gets the same service as everyone else which makes it impossible to broadcast the signal to a single room or hall who requests the service.

Check out our online movie suggestion form by going to the Boiler Television Home Page and click on the "Movie Suggestions" link on the left side of the page.

First, make it a point to check all connections and wires to make sure they are in good working condition. Second, help us help you by gathering some information before making a service request. Is the problem just one channel or all of them? If you have 2 outlets in the room, is the problem on both? Are the people across the hall having the same problem? What about other floors or the whole building? This information helps us resolve the problem much quicker. Third, report the trouble to your Resident Assistant or submit a request through Fix My Home Please. We will respond to most any problem within 24 hours.

Annually we conduct an online survey to find out what channel you would like added to the system next. Recent additions have been Country Music Television, The History Channel, The Learning Channel, The Sci-Fi Channel and SpikeTV based on past survey responses.

No. There is legislation which states that renters must be allowed to install satellite dishes at their home when they have a clear view of the southern sky and can work with their landlord to have it installed properly. University housing is specifically exempt from this legislation.

University Departments or Officially Recognized Student Organizations may submit Page Requests for the bulletin board. Resident Assistants may also submit ads for programming announcements. There is no cost to advertise on the bulletin board.

Yes and no. It is up to the discretion of the studios in Hollywood to decide if the prints we receive for public exhibition (which are different than home video) are closed captioned or not. We request as many closed captioned titles as possible, however there are still times when the number of captioned titles is low. For students who are hearing impaired and registered with Adaptive Services in the Dean of Students Office, we offer a service that may assist in getting the student access to captioned titles. Please contact Boiler Television at btv@purdue.edu or the Adaptive Services Office for more information.

From time to time we receive comments from viewers who are concerned about the content of motion pictures played on Boiler Television. It is our policy to run movies rated "G" up to and including "R". We have a diverse audience on campus with diverse tastes in film and we attempt to appeal to as broad a spectrum as possible. We believe it is your right to choose what to watch as much as what NOT to watch. Please keep that in mind that YOU choose what you or your family watch, not only on B2 but any television network. Should you still feel inclined to comment or suggest titles, you may email us at btv@purdue.edu.

That is a great question. We are occasionally experimenting with passing HDTV signals over the current system to see how it goes. It will be several years though before we are offering the local TV stations or other networks in HDTV. Part of the issue is channel capacity and cost. For some period of time we may have to offer both analog and digital signals of networks while people transition to the newer digital television sets. In that time we will have to have much more channel capacity than we do now to broadcast everything twice. In short, we have 42 channels now so we would need 84 channels just to duplicate our current lineup in standard and High Definition TV. Our current system wiring is not designed for that high of capacity. Stay tuned!

The music in the background of the B2 and B3 bulletin board comes via satellite from DMX Music. Log on to DMX -What is Playing Now to find out what is playing. Once on the page, scroll down to "Hottest List" which is the format we run. You can find a brief listing of music that has just played there. Enjoy the music!

Yes! The technology Tivo (tm) uses will search out the channel lineup and make your Tivo (tm) box work its magic, however local origination channels like B2 and B3 are not in their system and therefore will not record.

Go online to www.zap2it.com and enter the zipcode 47906. Then select "Purdue University." You should then have the official BTV Channel Lineup with what is currently playing or will be playing on each channel.
