Loft Guidelines

Purchasing a Loft from an Outside Vendor

Although lofts are available from vendors on campus, please note that University Residences does not pre-approve any manufacturer’s product other than www.Bedloft.com.

Building a Loft

A resident may only build their own loft if the residence hall in which they reside allows Purchase/Build in the table above.

Some students choose to build their own lofts. In order to help ensure resident safety, there are a number of guidelines regarding loft design, materials, and assembly. Check with your roommate.

Loft Construction Guidelines

Installation and Removal

  • The installation of a double loft in a student room may only be done if all roommates consent.
  • If one resident moves out during the contracted year, the double loft may remain unless a new resident is assigned to that room and finds the loft objectionable. In such a case, the loft must be removed.
  • Lofted bed construction should be completed no later than the second week of classes. Residence hall personnel will inspect all lofts for compliance to these guidelines. If initial construction is not approved, the resident has seven days to bring the loft into compliance or remove it.
  • When moving out, lofts must be dismantled prior to finals week and be removed from the building for storage. This is necessary to comply with the policy on maintaining quiet hours during finals week.
  • Neither lofts nor room furniture may be temporarily stored in hall corridors.

Construction and Fire Codes

  • A loft must be a freestanding and self-supporting structure, which means it cannot be attached to the building in any way or utilize University Residences furniture to support it.
  • Residence hall furniture may not be used as a ladder for access into the loft.
  • A loft may not include false floors or additional levels, and may not be enclosed in any way.
  • A bed rail is strongly recommended.
  • A loft must not rock into walls.
  • All furniture that comes with the room must remain in the room, and furniture that is attached to the walls or floors may not be moved.
  • The residents of the room assume full responsibility for any damage caused by the construction, use, or disassembly of their loft.
  • A loft must not block a potential fire exit, including both windows and doors. An access lane to the window, at least as wide as the doorway, must be unblocked and uncovered at all times.

Before renting, purchasing, or building a loft, be sure to check with your roommate to see if they would like a loft in the room and if they had intended to purchase one. All roommates must consent to use of the loft.
