Peer Mentor Program

A program to help under-represented students living in University Residences be successful at Purdue University.

Program Scope

Purdue University Residences Peer Mentor Program has been created to help ease the transition from high school to college. Student mentors meet regularly with under-represented students living in the residences to help them make those critical first days and weeks more successful. The more success students experience, and the better their support system, the more likely they are to continue their education.

Examples of assistance provided to the mentees may include:

  • Personal meetings and phone conversations several times throughout the semester.
  • Acquainting new students with resources and services available on campus.
  • Inviting students to attend cultural, developmental, and educational events.
  • Challenging new students to be more academically competitive and to become involved in leadership activities on campus.

Program Goals

  • To provide under-represented students with a support system and opportunities and experiences that teach transferable skills and build self efficacy and competence.
  • To encourage students to engage in career development and leadership opportunities.
  • To increase communication between under-represented students, faculty, staff, and community organizations.
  • To create a community of scholars among Purdue University alumni who are interested in supporting undergraduate students.
