UR Support Center a Growing Success with Students

URSC Collaboration Room

The UR Support Center is University Residences’ latest project in a continued effort to integrate academics into residential space, providing students with collaborative areas to learn where they live. The center, open to all students living in UR, helps foster faculty and student engagement through impactful learning and intellectual development within an innovative environment

At the grand opening event in September, vice provost for student life Beth McCuskey touted the investment in residents’ academic needs that will help them not only in their coursework now but also their future careers. She also touched on the academicizing of the URSC’s first floor location in Shreve Hall, space that was once a dining court but has now come full circle as a fully-fledged academic center.

The UR Support Center includes meeting and conference rooms for students and faculty, a collaborative lounge, a computer lab with both PC and Apple computers, and ample studying space. It also houses Supplemental Instruction sessions, COSINE tutoring sessions and Honors College advisors. Students can check out study materials such as dry erase boards, laptops and projectors, all of which stay in the center for student use. Student employees in the URSC monitor the usage of materials and space so that the center can continually adapt to the needs of students.URSC Ribbon Cutting

There is also an adjacent Honors i2i Learning Laboratory on the first floor of Shreve, an experiential learning environment for first-year engineering students. More than 3,000 engineering students live in University Residences.

The UR Support Center is open Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-1 a.m., Fridays 9 a.m.-12 a.m., and Sunday 11 a.m.-1 a.m. The success of the Shreve location has expedited the development of a second URSC in Cary Quad, which is expected to open in 2016.
